A magic link is a sign-in link sent to an email address instead of asking for a password. It lets a service confirm that someone can access the inbox associated with an account. The process can feel simple, but the link itself acts like a temporary key, so handling it carefully matters.

How the sign-in process works

You enter your email address on a sign-in screen, and the service sends a message containing a personal link. Opening it may sign you in directly or return you to the service to finish the process. The message should relate to a sign-in request you just made; an unexpected one deserves caution.

The link usually includes a token that identifies the request and is designed to work only for a limited period or use. If it has expired, already been used, or was opened on a different device, you may need to request another. Keep the message private, since forwarding it can give someone else the same access it gives you.

What to check before opening one

Check that you initiated the request and that the message appears to come from the service you intended to use. Read the destination carefully before opening the link, especially if the message creates pressure or asks for unrelated personal details. If the sender or destination seems unfamiliar, start again from the service’s usual sign-in page rather than relying on the message.

A beginner comparing terminology may encounter the phrase magic links service in discussions of email-based sign-in; the key idea is that a link serves as a temporary credential, not as a reusable password. Avoid copying it into shared chats, forwarding it, or leaving it visible on a device others can access. Be especially careful with email accounts used by several people, because anyone with inbox access may be able to request or use a sign-in link.

Benefits, limits, and common problems

Magic links remove the need to remember a separate password for each supported account, which can simplify sign-in. They also make access dependent on the security of the email account and the device used to open the message. If either is compromised, the convenience of inbox-based access can become a weakness.

A link that does not work may be stale, already used, or connected to a different browser session from the one where sign-in began. Requesting a fresh message through the official sign-in flow is generally safer than repeatedly opening an old link. For important accounts, review the available recovery and additional security options, and follow the service’s current instructions if access fails.
